‘Just like depression can go away, ADHD can too’: When patients want ADHD de-diagnosis
Professor James Scott says the patients seeking de-diagnosis of ADHD generally fall into three categories.
Some want the diagnosis removed because of issues with insurance or joining the armed forces, while others are not responding to treatment and, upon reassessment, discover another condition has been misdiagnosed as ADHD.
Then there are patients who stop taking medication and realise they no longer require it.
“About a third of people who have ADHD in childhood or adolescence will have complete remission of symptoms,” says Professor Scott, a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
