Kids’ risk of clotting events and heart conditions ‘lingers post-COVID-19’

Children who have had COVID-19 are at increased risk of ongoing health problems and severe acute events, such as pulmonary embolism, a study shows.
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers say data from 3.1 million patients aged 0-17 show that those who have been infected have twice the risk of pulmonary embolism, myocarditis and cardiomyopathy compared with peers.
In addition, there is an elevated risk of VTE, kidney failure and type 1 diabetes, which are otherwise “rare or uncommon” in this population.
While long COVID has raised concern for adults, data on new, recurring or continuing health problems in children occurring four or more weeks after infection with SARS-CoV-2 have been limited, the research team said.
