Lactase supplements trigger anaphylaxis in rare case

The patient likely became sensitised from handling the supplement for his lactose-intolerant son, say doctors.

Lactose intolerance is easily managed with OTC lactase supplements, but US doctors have reported a rare case of intolerance to the supplement itself in a man who had anaphylaxis after ingestion.

The 48-year-old patient — who was a hospital-based doctor himself — had a history of mild eczema, asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis but no IgE-mediated food allergies.

Still, he presented with four episodes of allergic reaction within 20 minutes of eating ice-cream.

The first two reactions involved immediate respiratory symptoms, including dyspnoea, chest tightness and wheeze.
