Lancet authors defend warnings over ‘menopause medicalisation’

Professor Martha Hickey and co-authors have sparked debate with their views menopause is increasingly seen as a disease.

Any claim that menopause was being over-medicalised and overtreated with MHT was always going to provoke discussion.

Last week, Professor Martha Hickey was in the headlines following the publication of the first Lancet Clinical Series on menopause.

She said she and her Australian co-authors had sifted through the mass of information — good and bad — to give a summary of current evidence amid a growing public willingness to talk about its impact on the lives of women.

The review stressed that the majority of women would not experience debilitating menopausal symptoms, although it also acknowledged that 60-80% of women would have menopausal flushes and sweats that could last, on average, seven years.
