Dispatching volunteer members of the public via a smartphone app to attend a nearby out-of-hospital cardiac emergency improves survival, a large Swedish study shows.

The concept is catching on in the UK and Europe with many ‘lay-responder’ systems already in operation to send registered members of the public rushing to perform CPR or find a nearby defibrillator.

A study presented at the ESC Congress 2021 has shown that such a system leads to a 28% higher rate of survival for patients having an out-of-hospital arrest.
