Lead poisoning alert over Ayurvedic medicine used in kids

Victoria's deputy Chief Health Officer (Environment) Dr Angie Bone urges patients to see their GP for blood tests if they have been taking the product

Australia’s drug watchdog is warning doctors and patients about the safety of an Ayurvedic medicine used for childhood autism after it was found to contain lead and other heavy metals.

The TGA says it is investigating a report “of dangerous levels of lead and other heavy metals” in Manasmithra Vatika and is warning people not to take it.

“If high levels of lead are present in these products, taking them could result in lead poisoning,” it said.

The product had been supplied to practitioners and patients in NSW and Victoria, but there may have been further product distribution to other states, the TGA said in a statement on Thursday 25 September.
