Patient safety expert says she and her family never visit specialists alone
One of the country’s leading experts on doctor complaints has revealed she and her family never attend specialist medical appointments alone, to reduce the risk of experiencing medical error.
Professor Marie Bismark, psychiatrist, spoke about her approach while commenting on the case of gynaecologist Dr Simon Gordon, who has been referred to police over alleged unnecessary surgeries on women.
Pathology reports for the women revealed little or no evidence of disease, ABC’s Four Corners reported last week, yet Dr Gordon allegedly diagnosed them with severe endometriosis after performing endometriosis surgeries.
It is alleged that some women underwent repeat surgeries, with one undergoing seven procedures, including the removal of both of her ovaries and uterus, with Dr Gordon since referred to police by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan.
