Leading GP in critical condition after almost drowning

One of Australia’s leading GPs is in a critical condition in hospital after being pulled face down from the surf on the Gold Coast at the weekend.

According to media reports, off-duty lifesavers performed CPR on Professor Chris Del Mar, 69, on Sunday morning, shortly after a member of the public rescued him at Miami Beach.

Paramedics were called at 5.43am and he was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Professor Del Mar is professor of public health at Bond University and an expert on evidence-based medicine.
