‘Left picking up the pieces’: A former army doctor shares his story

“I’ve had many veterans tell me that they would have ended their life if it wasn’t for the care that I provided them. I’m quite honoured that I had a role in saving them.”
This is Dr Phil Parker, a Brisbane GP who dedicates most of his time to helping returned servicemen and women rebuild their lives, and themselves, after re-joining civilian life.
He served with the Australian Army for 28 years, starting out as an infantry soldier and officer before going on to study medicine so he could join the medical corps.
In 2012, he deployed to Afghanistan as a taskforce surgeon.
