‘Limited’ semaglutide supplies on the way: TGA

Semaglutide will return to pharmacy shelves this month, but the TGA has warned not all patients previously prescribed the GLP-1 receptor agonist will be able to resume treatment immediately.
A surge in off-label prescribing for weight loss led to a worldwide semaglutide shortage, to the extent it was unavailable in Australia from mid-November onwards.
On Wednesday, the medicines watchdog announced that “some but not all” pharmacies would receive fresh stocks of semaglutide (Ozempic) late next week.
It stressed that initial supplies would “not be enough to meet demand from all patients with current valid prescriptions for type 2 diabetes nor for those taking it off label for other conditions”.
