‘Literally millions of free visits’: Mark Butler lauds latest GP bulk-billing rate

For those patients still paying gap fees, the average across all GP consultations is $60.27, the data show.

The GP bulk-billing rate has continued rising, with Minister for Health and Ageing Mark Butler confident it will reach 90% by 2030.

The latest data from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing show 84.2% of all GP services under Medicare were bulk-billed in April-June 2026.

For level B GP consultations — including face to face, telephone and video — the figure was 82.5%, compared with 79.3% in April-June 2025.

The Federal Government spent more than a billion dollars on bulk-billed level B consultations in April-June 2026, the data show.
