A leading trauma surgeon has pleaded with a state government to abandon plans to relax driving offences for medicinal cannabis users, saying the move will cost lives.
In a decision widely applauded, the NSW Government says it will introduce a legal limit on the concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) a driver can have in their system if they have a prescription.
According to media reports, the government wants to exempt patients from the current three-month ban or heavy fines if a laboratory test found their saliva had fewer than 50ng/mL of THC.
With some 300,000 medicinal cannabis users in the state, Premier Chris Minns said the changes were a “commonsense” approach that balanced fairness with road safety.
