‘Lives will be lost’: Trauma doctors warn medicinal cannabis driving threshold has no scientific basis

Surgeon Dr John Crozier is one of over 20 doctors who have signed a statement urging NSW against easing cannabis driving laws.

Leading trauma surgeons, anaesthetists and ED doctors have condemned a government plan to allow 300,000 medicinal cannabis users to drive while on the drug, warning it will normalise impaired driving and increase the road death toll.

New laws are being introduced in NSW to set a legal limit of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in drivers with a prescription for medicinal cannabis.

The threshold means patients will be exempt from the current three-month driving ban or heavy fines if a saliva test shows less than 50ng/mL of THC.

Premier Chris Minns describes the changes as a “commonsense” approach that balances fairness with road safety.
