From nursing to stand-up — or sit-down — comedy at the tender age of 95, meet the woman who's still drawing laughs.
Liz Hicklin is touring her one-woman show, 95 & Still Alive, promoted as (probably) Australia’s oldest sit-down, stand-up comedian.
Leaning on her pink walker, the former nurse is performing in venues and festivals, drawing on her “many lives”, which have included her time working as a nurse in the aftermath of World War II.
Originally from Manchester, UK, she trained in the early 1950s, but had always loved performing and literature, bringing both to the wards where she worked.
She recalls offering two male patients, who had what was then called ‘rheumatism’, a poem as an alternative to painkillers.
