More long-term data required to progress bid for transgender surgery Medicare items: MSAC

The Medical Services Advisory Committee said it supported transgender medical care but public funding required very robust evidence.

*A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that the Medical Services Advisory Committee had rejected the application for transgender surgery Medicare items. It has been updated on 1 August to reflect that the application is still under review by the committee, pending further data.

The Medical Services Advisory Committee has requested more clinical evidence to support a proposal for 30 new MBS items for transgender surgeries.

The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons lodged the application back in 2023, requesting 17 MBS items for genital reconstruction surgery, nine items for facial surgery, three items for chest surgery and one for voice surgery.

It suggested schedule fees such as $1467.40 for a bilateral simple mastectomy and $1267.20 for feminising chest surgery by any method.
