MABEL survey axed after losing its $600,000 research grant

The study exposed the income gap between GPs and other specialists

A major longitudinal study which has exposed the yawning gap between the incomes of GPs and other specialists has been axed.

Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life (MABEL) has been running since 2008, collecting statistics on doctors’ health, job satisfaction, working hours and waiting times.

Based on responses of 10,000 doctors, it has underpinned Australian Doctor’s income reports tracking the major gaps between the incomes of GPs and other specialists.

It means that the income figures from 2018 – which showed that GPs were earning $101 per hour, $71 less than the average for non-GP specialists – will be the last.
