Major NDIS overhaul ‘shuts out GPs’ from independent assessments

A new approach will involve three-hour evaluations in the home by contracted allied health workers

There are fears GPs will have limited input into the disability assessments of their patients who are applying for the NDIS.

Under major reforms to the scheme, a standardised assessment process is being introduced from the middle of this year.

It means allied health professionals working for companies contracted by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will perform in-home evaluations.

Conducted over three hours, they will include interviews and an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to perform everyday household tasks.
