Man armed with knife threatens hospital staff for hours

AMA ACT president Dr Kerrie Aust says it is 'very disappointing that we have to have these conversations focused on how to keep staff safe'.

A patient under a psychiatric treatment order drew a knife on hospital staff and threatened them until a tactical team disarmed him, police say.

The patient, 35, was picked up by police for breaching the order last Wednesday and taken to Canberra Hospital, an ACT Policing spokesperson told AusDoc.

He then drew a knife, sparking a prolonged stand-off in the hospital’s behavioural assessment unit, the spokesperson said.
