Man suffers black-out after burping up tumour: UK case

The 82-year-old experienced several, transient episodes of airway obstruction after belching, before seeking help

An elderly man who was experiencing short episodes of airway obstruction was in fact belching up a large hypopharyngeal tumour, UK doctors have discovered.

The 82-year-old presented to the ED complaining he had passed out the previous night after his airway became temporarily obstructed.

He reported a three-month history of a transient sensation of having a foreign body in his throat after belching or regurgitation.

Over the previous three weeks he had also experienced multiple, short and self-limiting episodes of airway obstruction, report doctors from the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust in Canterbury.
