Managed care or managed scare? Private health insurer wants to open 130 medical clinics within three years

One of Australia’s biggest private health insurers is rejecting claims that its plan to build a network of 130 medical centres risks undermining patient care.
According to media reports last week, Bupa is considering a possible bid for the troubled private hospital giant Healthscope, which is currently mired in $4 billion of debt.
While it refuses to comment on the claim, the insurer says its current strategy is to invest in GP and primary care clinics and partner with hospitals to provide services.
Bupa, which has more than four million members in Australia, currently runs 180 dental clinics, 50 optical stores and 22 medical centres.
