MBS item for reviewing mental health care plans to be scrapped

Note: This article has been updated with a response from the Department of Health and Aged Care.
The $78.95 MBS item for reviewing a mental health care plan will be scrapped next year.
The item was claimed by GPs more than 469,000 times in 2023 but it will be removed on 1 November next year.
Under a measure described as “improving the Better Access scheme”, the budget papers state: “GPs will be able to use standard consultation items to review mental health treatment plans and deliver mental health care, instead of having to use dedicated GP mental health Medicare items.”
