MBS items for IVF genetic testing on way

IVF testing for genetic disorders, including cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, will soon be covered by a Medicare rebate.
From 1 November, patients will be able to claim a rebate for five new items covering pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) services provided within the existing IVF process.
PGT can be used to test embryos for either a specific known single gene condition or chromosome variation, allowing chromosomally healthy embryos, or those unaffected by a specific genetic disorder, to be selected for implantation during an IVF cycle.
Types of genetic disorders able to be tested include, but are not limited to, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, Fragile X, neurofibromatosis and Huntington’s disease.
