Medical board hits back at specialist college over ‘unprofessional’ conduct accusation

The Medical Board of Australia has hit back hard after being accused of unprofessional behaviour over its fast-track scheme for IMG specialists.
This week, the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) took aim at the watchdog, alleging it had been kept in the dark over moves to bring in overseas anaesthetists to fill workforce holes in regional hospitals.
Under the scheme, only specialists with qualifications formally approved by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) are eligible for the pathway.
Those accepted will undergo workplace-based assessments, cultural safety education, a minimum of six months’ supervision and when it comes to anaesthetists, an anaesthetic crisis course.
