Medical colleges represented in Mardi Gras parade for the first time

A dozen medical colleges were formally represented at Mardi Gras for the first time this weekend as part of a float featuring 60 doctors and medical students in sequined scrubs.
The involvement of colleges including the RACGP and ACRRM was thanks to a new Pride in Medicine group, which approached them to request their support ahead of the World Pride event in Sydney.
Endocrine surgeon Associate Professor James Lee said it was in response to the experiences of some LGBTQI+ doctors in training.
“A lot of doctors and medical students are still afraid to come out for fear of not being selected for certain training programs, or being able to pursue the career that they want,” said Professor Lee, the group’s vice-president.
