Medical colleges unite for tougher greenhouse gas targets

The health system won't cope if climate change continues unchecked, they warn

Australia’s specialist medical colleges have come together to demand tougher emissions targets to protect the country from the “greatest threat to health care”.

The presidents of 10 colleges warn the health system will not cope with unmitigated climate change, with emergencies from bushfires, drought and floods likely to increase dramatically.

It follows the release of a report commissioned by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) on climate change’s impacts on health care.

It recommends climate risk assessments are developed along with locally-led disaster planning for healthcare systems.
