Medical Must-See: Doctor’s surgery slip-up ends in own amputation

In an unfortunate case of iatrogenesis, a suturing slip-up resulted in a rare infection and amputation — for the doctor.
The 35-year-old presented to ED 24 hours after the accident with a blackened right middle finger, accompanied by pain, swelling and blistering.
An O&G resident, he had pricked his fingertip, at the base of the distal phalanx on the palmar aspect, with a needle during gynaecological surgery at a rural hospital.
Following the injury, IV ceftriaxone was administered, with no improvement.
