Medical receptionist sentenced for $30,000 Medicare fraud she says she cannot remember

Erin Grant claimed she was experiencing dissociative disorder at the time of the offending.

A medical receptionist who claims she has no memory of submitting 106 fraudulent Medicare claims to pocket almost $30,000 has been sentenced to one year’s home detention.

Erin Grant, 36, entered false details to suggest that patients had attended an appointment with one of eight doctors at the GP practice where she worked and had paid in cash.

She then lodged the claims with Medicare and directed the rebates worth $29,512 to her own personal card, the Supreme Court of Tasmania heard.

She subsequently cancelled the appointments — for which she had listed herself as the patient in some cases — to ensure the practice’s financial records remained accurate.
