Medical schools will have to prioritise proctored exams and workplace assessments to stop students outsourcing their learning to AI, an Australian expert warns.

The breakneck improvements in AI’s abilities have made take-home written assessments “essentially a write-off”, says Associate Professor David Kok, a radiation oncologist and medical education expert.

“It is pretty clear no assessment comes to us right now that has not been touched by AI in some way,” he told the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists’ Intelligence26 conference last week.

“The stronger formats have become real time, OSCEs and observed workplace-based assessments. It is looking very much like that is the future of education.”
