Medical students to receive free tuition after academic’s $1 billion gift
Students at a medical school in the Bronx will be free of “crushing” higher education debt after the widow of a Wall Street investor made a $US1 billion ($1.5 billion) donation to the college.
More than 700 students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City celebrated on hearing they would receive free tuition following the gift.
The donation, from 93-year-old Dr Ruth Gottesman (PhD), a Professor Emerita at the Bronx school, was the largest ever made to a medical school.
Tuition fees at the school are around $US60,000 ($92,000) the gift would apply to all 700 students.
