Creating a ‘GP assistant’ role for medical students and letting GP registrars receive teaching payments are among 15 recommendations for convincing new graduates to train as GPs.

Currently, only 15% of graduating medical students want to become GPs — a statistic federal Minister for Health Mark Butler has labelled “the most terrifying in healthcare”.

According to Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) president Jasmine Davis, Australia is facing a potential a shortfall of more than 10,000 GPs by 2032, putting the entire primary care system at risk of collapse.

A report by AMSA, released on Monday, provides a list of recommendations for the Federal Government and universities to boost interest in the specialty.
