‘Medicare is not coming to the rescue’: Average gap fee for a level B consult rises to $44

The average GP gap fee is now $44.10 for a standard consultation and $62.70 for a long consultation, government data show, as practices grapple with inflation and the payroll tax threat.
The average standard fee in January–March was 8% higher compared with the same period last year, when it was $40.70, according to data published on Monday.
GP business consultant Riwka Hagen said it suggested GP practices were coming to a “more confident posture around pricing”.
“There is a shortage of GPs, difficulty in obtaining appointments, practices hiking fees in response to the payroll tax and just general inflation,” she said.
