The new rebate is still well short of the $150 fee the RACGP recommended back in 2018

The Medicare rebate for IUD insertion has risen nearly $30, with the Federal Government accepting recommendations from the MBS Review Taskforce to boost uptake of the procedure.

From 1 March, the fee for item 33503 â€” which covers IUD insertion for abnormal uterine bleeding and contraception â€” rises to $83.40, up from $55.70.

The rebate, calculated at 85% of the schedule fee, rises to $70.90.

The descriptor has also been amended to include use of IUDs as endometrial protection for women on oestrogen replacement therapy.
