The RACGP’s national conference has celebrated the trailblazing work of two Indigenous GPs.

The college’s top accolade, the Rose-Hunt Award, was given to Associate Professor Brad Murphy, the inaugural chair of its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health faculty.

Professor Murphy, a Kamilaroi man, was a GP registrar in the remote Queensland townships of Theodore and Eidsvold — more than six hours’ drive from Brisbane — before attaining fellowship and setting up his own practice on the rural outskirts of Bundaberg.

At the ceremony on Friday, Professor Murphy said he was inspired by the growing numbers of Indigenous doctors, which have nearly doubled since 2014 to more than 500.
