Melatonin shows promise for chronic musculoskeletal pain: Aussie meta-analysis

Melatonin showed more promise for chronic musculoskeletal pain than for postoperative musculoskeletal pain.

Melatonin is associated with similar pain reductions as NSAIDs for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, an Australian meta-analysis suggests.

The University of Sydney–led team found nine eligible randomised controlled trials of 3-10mg/day of melatonin for chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, with about 450 participants in total, as well as 14 trials looking at postoperative MSK pain.

Chronic conditions included fibromyalgia, knee osteoarthritis and neuropathic pain.

Their meta-analysis showed a mean pain reduction of 8.96/100 compared with all comparator treatments for chronic MSK pain but only 6.76/100 compared with placebo arms, which was not statistically significant.
