Use of menopausal hormone therapy is associated with increased risk of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease among postmenopausal women, according to a review in Menopause.

US clinicians conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association between ever or current menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) use and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

Overall, the researchers observed a 29% higher risk of GORD among women who used MHT.

They also found a 41%, 39% and 16% elevated risk with oestrogen-only, progesterone-only and combination therapy, respectively.
