Children and teenagers with migraine are twice as likely to have anxiety and depressive disorders than those without a migraine diagnosis, shows a first-of-its-kind review.

Canadian researchers say their findings confirm a widespread view among doctors and highlight the importance of routinely screening for relevant psychiatric symptoms in this setting.

In their systematic review and meta-analysis, the University of Calgary–led team used data from 80 case-control, cohort and cross-sectional studies to determine the link between internalising symptoms and migraine in under-18s.

In total, the studies covered approximately 133,632 participants.
