Ministers face slip, slop, slap over legislation to axe VicHealth
VicHealth, a world first when it was created, may survive as an independent health body after MPs vowed to block its abolition.
The Labor Government announced in December that it wanted to submerge the preventive health body into Victoria’s Department of Health in a move to rein in state spending.
But a majority of Victoria’s Upper House are now saying they will oppose the necessary legislation.
VicHealth was founded in 1987 as an independent health authority, a world first at the time, and remains one of only two legally independent, government-funded health promotion bodies in Australia.
