MJA to be fully fledged open-access journal by 2026, says new editor

The Medical Journal of Australia’s incoming editor-in-chief says she wants all its published articles to be fully open access by 2026.
Professor Ginny Barbour, a founding editor of PLOS Medicine who is currently based at the Queensland University of Technology, will take over from Professor Nick Talley next month following the gastroenterologist’s seven-year term.
She is also the director of Open Access Australasia, an advocacy group that encourages journals to make their research free to read.
While the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) already unlocks select articles — all research and articles on public health or Indigenous health are free access — Professor Barbour says she wants to eventually unlock all its content before her tenure is up.Â
