More than 1000 coronavirus clinical studies underway: What are they?

Hydroxychloroquine is being examined in at least 24 trials, raising concerns over duplication, say authors of MJA review

In the three months since COVID-19 emerged from Wuhan, China, more than 1100 clinical trials have been registered globally, including 500 randomised trials.

Australian researchers say the scientific pace has been “breathtaking”, but it also presents challenges, including the risk of duplication and competition.

“How do we separate the wheat from the chaff and make some sense of all the noise we are hearing about clinical trials for COVID-19?,” they write in the latest MJA.

Led by infectious diseases specialist, Conjoint Professor Joshua Davis, of John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, the team conducted a review focusing on the larger randomised controlled trials, summarising those with a target sample size of more than 1000.
