More IMGs than ever start GP registrar training

Growing numbers of IMGs are entering GP training, even as locals turn their backs on the specialty.
New figures show 391 IMGs enrolled in the GP training program in 2018, representing 27% of all entrants.
By contrast, 235 IMGs signed up to become GP registrars in 2014, making up 19% of that year’s enrolments in the Australian General Practice Training program (AGPT).
But numbers of Australian medical graduates joining the program have taken a hit, from a high of 1218 in 2016 to 1054 last year.
