More than 1000 pharmacies can start prescribing antibiotics for UTIs from today

More than half the pharmacies in NSW will be diagnosing and treating uncomplicated UTIs from Monday, with further services planned for the contraceptive pill in the coming months.
It follows the expansion of the state government’s $3 million prescribing trial, launched in May, from 94 to 1000 pharmacies.
However, NSW Health is still to release the trial’s full protocol, including details on the mechanisms to track adverse events or how the trial will be judged a success or not.
Pharmacists are being allowed to prescribe and dispense trimethoprim, nitrofurantoin and cefalexin as first, second and third-line treatments for UTIs.
