More than 3000 doctors invited to register as general practice’s first subspecialists
Health ministers announced that rural generalism would become a subspecialty in October last year.
Thousands of rural doctors with eligible qualifications are now being invited to register as ‘rural generalists’, Australian general practice’s first official subspecialty.
It is believed there are at least 2400 doctors with ACRRM fellowships and an estimated 800 doctors with the FRACGP-RG, a qualification first awarded by the RACGP in 2022.
These doctors will need only to provide evidence of their qualification to be registered as rural generalists, which will become a protected title.
However, rural GPs without the fellowships can also register with AHPRA but they will need to provide evidence that they have the “level of expertise” required of a rural generalist.
