More than 5.5 million RATs due to expire in the next three months

Professor Adrian Esterman says COVID-19 figures are underestimates, and governments should provide RATs about to expire for free

Millions of COVID-19 rapid antigen tests purchased by state and territory governments will expire in coming months, with at least one expert calling for them to be given away to Australians.

Analysis by the ABC shows about 5.5 million tests are due to expire in the next three months in Queensland and WA alone.

Between one third and two thirds of tests bought by state and territory governments have not been distributed, although figures are unknown in NSW and SA as they did not participate in the analysis.

Professor Nancy Baxter, head of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, said it was unreasonable to expect every test purchased would be used.
