Myocarditis in teens post COVID-19 vax ‘mild, self-resolving’

Largest Australian study from one hospital shows they all recovered with rest and ibuprofen

A group of teenagers with myocarditis following COVID-19 vaccination experienced a mild, self-resolving illness, with none requiring intensive care, according to Australian findings.

Researchers looked at data on 33 adolescents who presented to Monash Children’s Hospital in Melbourne with symptoms of myocarditis associated with troponin rise (>15ng/L).

They attended within 28 days of receiving either a first or second dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine between August 2021 and December 2021, according to the research letter in the Medical Journal of Australia.

“None of the 33 included patients presented with congestive heart failure or required intensive care treatment, inotropic support, immunoglobulin or steroid therapy,” reported the authors, led by Dr Suraj Varma, a paediatric cardiologist at MonashHeart and Monash Children’s Hospital.
