Neurologist flies solo around Australia for his paediatric patients with rare diseases

Associate Professor Andrew Kornberg was inspired to take to the skies when two young brothers could not join a trial.

There are no heights that Associate Professor Andrew Kornberg will not go to for his young patients — even if it means spending three weeks stuffed into the cockpit of a small plane.

The paediatric neurologist has just returned home to Melbourne after flying a single-engine aircraft 27,000km around the nation’s coastline in 23 days on a fundraising mission for his rare diseases patients.

“The purpose of this is to raise awareness and to fundraise to establish a precinct for children with rare conditions and genetic conditions,” said the senior neurologist at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.

He is hoping to secure $4.5 million by the end of year to fund dedicated beds, staff and infrastructure for research and treatment.
