$300 aged care incentive a game changer — for some GPs at least

Dr Khayyam Altaf says it has transformed his practice for the better.

A GP who treats hundreds of aged care patients says the new aged care incentive has been a game changer for his patients and his practice’s finances.

The General Practice in Aged Care Incentive (GPACI), which began in 2024, has driven some GPs out of aged care entirely due to the bureaucracy and risk of missing out on payments.

The GPACI pays $300 to GPs and $130 to practices for each aged care patient who receives eight visits and two care planning services within 12 months.

Dr Khayyam Altaf co-owns a practice dedicated to aged care, with about 20 GPs and more than 1500 patients across 50 aged care homes.
