New mothers are sourcing breastmilk for their babies from strangers. Is this a dangerous trade?

One Facebook group where parents share breastmilk boasts 10,000 members

After struggling to express milk for her three-month-old baby, an Australian woman turns to Facebook to ask mothers if they have any to spare.

The Facebook group is called Human Milk 4 Human Babies.

The young mum can list her preferences if she wants: donors who are non-smokers, non-drinkers, caffeine-free, who take no prescription drugs, who have had no COVID-19 vaccines.

Certain other women making similar requests will ask to see proof of negative blood test results – evidence the donor does not have HIV or hepatitis.
