New ‘specialty’ GP heart clinic opens

A GP clinic focused purely on cardiovascular health has opened in Sydney, promising patients faster turnaround on investigations and referrals to cardiologists.
Staffed by six part-time doctors, Heart GP opened weeks before a News Corp and National Heart Foundation of Australia campaign for new Medicare funding for GP heart checks — which resulted in the Federal Government rolling out a new $170 million MBS item.
The clinic is offering ECGs, stress tests and Holter monitoring, and bulk-bills concession card holders.
It also has cardiologists on-call to answer any questions from the GPs, but its goal is to manage patients’ cardiovascular health within the clinic.
