Newspaper attacks on gender dysphoria physician ‘unfair’, says media watchdog
The Australian unfairly and personally targeted the head of a high-profile children’s gender clinic across dozens of articles it ran about transgender healthcare, the media watchdog has found.
The director of Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital gender clinic, Associate Professor Michelle Telfer, complained to the Australian Press Council about 45 articles published by the newspaper, including news stories, opinion pieces and editorials.
They included articles with headlines such as ‘Young sex-swap cases rise 330pc’ and ‘Medicalisation of gender is dividing our society and abusing our defenceless children’.
The paper also took to describing the clinic as “the Telfer Clinic”.
