NHMRC backs push for GPs to prescribe ADHD stimulants

The push is on to broaden prescribing rights for ADHD stimulant medication and implement nationally standardised training for interested GPs.
The first NHMRC-endorsed Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Guidelines for ADHD, released Wednesday, warn that continuing to restrict prescribing to psychiatrists and paediatricians limits access for patients.
Services are already overstretched, say the guideline developers: the interdisciplinary Australian ADHD Professionals Association (AADPA).
The association has recommended GPs, as well as other specialists, “be supported to increase their skills in identifying, diagnosing and treating people with ADHD, including prescribing stimulants”.
